ROBERT PHERIGO makes music as a composer, pianist, tenor, and conductor. He was a member of newEar Contemporary Music Ensemble for 15 years, exploring, in all four of his musical guises, the exciting and varied music of today’s modern composers. As a newEar performer, he was in numerous world premieres and performed at Modern Music festivals in Thailand and China. In 2013 he sang the role of Charles Darwin in the world premiere of Darwin, an opera jointly produced by newEar and the Owen/Cox Dance Group. Robert has composed works for, among others, newEar, Kansas City Chorale, Lyric Arts Trio, Verses, and Voices Festival and the Lawrence Children’s Choir. His arrangement, written for the Lawrence Children’s Choir, of the well known Christmas Carol Sing We Now of Christmas, is published by Santa Barbara Musical Publishing under the title Sing We Now Noel!
Robert sang with the Kansas City Chorale, Charles Bruffy conductor, for 10 years. During that time five recordings of the Chorale, produced by Nimbus Records, were released to critical acclaim. As a pianist, Robert continues his association with them, most memorably in performances of Liszt’s Via Crucis and Brahms’ German Requiem. He enjoys playing solo piano recitals, recently performing Charles Ives’ “Concord” Sonata and Beethoven’s Sonata in E Major, Op. 109. His piano artistry can be heard on recordings of the music of Narong Prancharoen, Ingrid Stölzel, and Mara Gibson. Robert has performed with the Kansas City Symphony and Lyric Opera of Kansas City. Presently Robert is piano instructor and choir accompanist at St. Teresa’s Academy and pianist at Unity Temple on the Plaza.
Raised in Kansas City, Robert went to college at Arizona State University (piano performance with Robert Hamilton), spent a year in Florida, and lived 9 years freelancing in Chicago before returning to Kansas City. He enjoys reading, (Haruki Murakami being one of his favorite authors), movies, bicycling, travel, and meditating. He is married to the wonderful flutist, soprano, and educator, Lyra Pherigo, who also happens to be his favorite recital partner!
